AkzoNobel Surface Chemistry in Stenungsund, Sweden is strengthening their Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) center by recruiting two Analytical Chemists to the Measurement and Analytical Science (MAS) group. One of the positions is focused on wet chemistry and the other combines wet and surface chemistry.
The MAS group is a central part of RD&I at AkzoNobel Surface Chemistry and offers an inspiring work environment allowing for both independent and team/project work. The daily work offers a twist of great variation; supporting application areas from hairspray to asphalt and working with anything from research samples to ton scale plant issues that need immediate attention. The MAS group works with analyses of newly developed and existing products as well as with development and validation of analytical methods. MAS provide expertise in the area of analytical chemistry to research projects within the RD&I teams along with customer complaints, production issues in the plants, other Business Units of AkzoNobel and external customers. Although you will mainly work within your area of expertise you will collaborate with, and to some extent work in, other expertise areas of the group such as chromatography and NMR. Your main responsibilities will be to:
- Develop and maintain expertise in at least the area of Wet Chemistry or Wet/Surface Chemistry, but be updated with all techniques used in the group on a general level in order to ensure that the tasks are resolved using the best available techniques.
- Develop, implement, validate and take responsibility of analytical methods and instruments (e.g. rheometer, tensiometer, automated titration, IR, UV/Vis), with the aim to have accurate and reliable analytical techniques that fulfill quality demands and HSE legislations.
- Act as an expert in identification and quantification questions related to new product development, customer complaints, trouble shooting in production issues etc.
- Take an active part in large and small projects, both within and outside the group.
- Run analytical experiments, interpret and report the results according to routines.
- Independently and in teams run assignments, in accordance to prioritizations.
- Develop and maintain a good Surface Chemistry product know how.
- Take an active part in the lab by contributing to housekeeping in a positive way and work with continuous improvement; propose changes that promote safety, quality, reliability and efficiency.
- In the Wet Chemistry area you will be one of our experts working with analyses that often require a fast response to support both small and large projects as well as production support and customer complaints.
- In the Surface Chemistry area you will be one of our experts who support the project teams with expertise and instrument know-how. Many people outside the MAS team use the Surface Chemistry lab and you will have a coordinating role in this.

Qualification:
We are aiming to fill two positions with similar responsibilities but within different areas of expertise: wet chemistry and wet chemistry in combination with surface chemistry. We are looking for experts within respective areas holding a PhD/Licentiate in a relevant topic or a MSc in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering combined with 5-7 years of relevant work experience.
You have in depth knowledge in wet chemistry and surface chemistry and general knowledge in chromatography and spectroscopy (NMR, IR, MS). Good knowledge in organic chemistry is a plus. You enjoy practical laboratory work and have excellent skills in regard to laboratory equipment. The position requires excellent problem solving skills and ability to handle complex and difficult assignments. In addition, good knowledge and understanding of validation/statistics and ISO 17025 is beneficial.
On a personal level you are proactive and enjoy working both independently and in teams. You are organized and able to prioritize your work and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Excellent English, both spoken and in writing, is required and good Swedish is a plus. Personal skills will be highly valued in the selection process.
